End of 2012

Hello! It's been a while since I've uploaded, but I've been working on a lot! I ended up moving from Yokohama, Japan back to Houston, Texas (where I'm currently living) and stopped for 2 weeks in London on the way home. Before and after that time, I managed to gather my time to work on Christmas commissions and some inking exercises. Augie is the last painting I did in Japan and the rest have been drawn/ painted in the last 2 weeks I've been in America. I've been busy.

In other news, this might be my last post here. Please, please, PLEASE go to my Tumblr account and follow me here: http://kellyfscribbles.tumblr.com/

I WILL BE UPDATING MY TUMBLR OFTEN!!! I hope you all have brilliant New Year's parties and a beautiful and lovely 2013! Cheers!

Firefall Fest Garrett

Decided to play around with the brush settings in Photoshop and try inking digitally in a very different way than I've done it before. As a massive Mega64 fan, I decided to use Garrett's character from their Firefall Fest stream as inspiration for experimenting with digital inking. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Dog Portrait/ Leaving

I'm finishing up with Japan, spending 2 weeks in London and moving internationally back to the US. Things have been quiet on the blog, but I've still been working. Life has just been incredibly hectic with the move. I'm debating whether to call it quits on this blog and move to a tumblr as well. Blogspot seems like a very well and dead platform, but I've been trying to avoid tumblr just because of all the art theft that goes on around those parts. Speaking of art theft, I've had my share of that lately.

On to brighter topics. Here's an animal portrait I've just recently completely.

Painting:

This is my last animal portrait for a while due to the move and greener pastures. As you may/ may not have noticed... I've been directing my portfolio into a different direction. Come December, I'm grafting hard into the world of comics. This blog will either be exploding or a tumblr link may be coming your way. Who knows what the future holds?

Noel Fielding Sketches (again)

Experimenting with graphite and marker combined. I think it looks quite nice together for sketches. It's really easy for the graphite to get messy quickly though since I'm working so dark. Yes. Noel Fielding was the subject matter.

Noel Fielding Gouache

Went for a jog after painting the last quick watercolor and felt like doing another portrait of Noel. His face is so hard to capture for me. It's always a fun challenge to paint him. This one's in gouache.

Noel Fielding Watercolor

Quick portrait of Noel Fielding in watercolor. Painted in my sketchbook earlier today.

Paul Foot Portrait

My portrait of the wonderful Paul Foot. Corel Painter and a little Photoshop. About 9 hours? His comedy stylings can be found here: http://www.paulfoot.tv/

Bentley Portrait

It's been quite a while since I've done a small pet portrait. I actually haven't touched acrylics in over a year. So, this was quite refreshing to do something traditional once more. I learned how to buy canvas and paints for the first time living in Japan (as I brought my gouache with me from America). In Japan, they size the canvas according to the traditional French sizes. This is an S0 size canvas (7"x7").

This was done for a nice lady in Houston as a present for her daughter. If you would like to order a portrait of your pet, I do ship internationally (now that I live in Japan).

Mighty Boosh Portraits

As you may or may not have noticed by now, I've become quite obsessed with The Mighty Boosh. I've done several portraits of Noel Fielding, but I really wanted to do character portraits of Vince Noir and Howard Moon. Collectively done in Corel Painter and Photoshop and took around 15 hours.

Self Portrait

It's Golden Week in Japan and that means holidays for most. I decided that it was time that I overhaul my website and work on a new self portrait. My old self- portrait was from November 2009 so I was more than over-due for a new one. Corel Painter and Photoshop (the usual). I included 2 close-ups.

Noel Fielding Sketches

Have I lost my mind? I'm not quite sure. I've just started sketching Noel Fielding in my free time at work. He has such a striking face. I love it. I think I need to stop drawing Noel, but I am going to do some Mighty Boosh fan art in the near future (yay Golden Week!).

Simon Amstell Portrait

Another fun, quick portrait I did this weekend. This one took around 4 hours. Started in Photoshop and finished in Corel Painter (the usual).

I've really gotten into British comedy as of late and I can quite honestly relate to Simon Amstell and his quirky stories. He's a brilliant comedian and if you don't know who he is, you should check out season 2 of Grandma's House (currently airing in the UK).

Noel Fielding Portrait

Quick portrait that I whipped up of one of my favorite actors/ comedians. I'm kind of in love with Noel and wanted to do a portrait again. Corel Painter. Maybe 3 hours.

Yokohama Train Sketches

2-5 minute sketches of sheer boredom while I'm stuck in transit on the trains in Yokohama. Typically on the Sotetsu Line.

Dr. Sketchy's Tokyo

I've attended Dr. Sketchy's Tokyo two times since I've been living in Japan. I recently went back last Wednesday and as I went to post the sketches up here, I realized I had never posted September's sketch session up here. So here are some figure drawing sketches. 2- 20 min. sketches.

Photo Restoration

So this week I took on a big challenge, I decided to restore an old family photo from 1933 of my great grandparents (on my dad's side). The original size of the image (barrel and all) is about 4" x 3". The image itself is about 2.5" x 1.75". My family is pretty sure they are at the World's Fair on Lake Michigan. The first image is the unrestored image and the latter is my restoration work.

Mega64: Mega Gods

After a month of painting on weekends and in what little free time I had (October was busy!) I managed to finish a painting request for the one and only Mega64. I can honestly say I've never spent as much time on a painting as I did on this one. This was ridiculously complicated. For more information on this painting, I've linked 2 youtube videos from the Mega64 podcast (edited by Royce Kokami).

Mega64 Portraits

Finished portraits of the guys over at Mega64. Love their work and wanted to do some fan art.

Portrait Sketches

I'm finally starting to work on the Mega64 portraits again. I decided not to do them traditionally and to just go ahead and do them in Photoshop and Painter like I did my last self- portrait and the Jhonen Vasquez portrait. Below are the finalized sketches. I still haven't flushed out the backgrounds yet, but I have some ideas.

Raina Portrait

Portrait of Raina from thesis. I wanted to start revisiting my thesis characters and possibly start really writing and pencilling my comic "Atelier". This project may or may not happen in the future. This was done in Photoshop CS4.
